WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING

“European Scholar Congress on Environmental Issues”
Activity “WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING”

Host school: Opshtinsko osnovno uchilishte Kocho Racin Kumanovo, Macedonia

Duration: 4th – 8th November 2019

Monday – 4th of November

The students and the teachers form the partner schools met the Macedonian  Erasmus team, both teachers and students. They were welcome by the organizers and by the headmaster of the school. Then, the Macedonian host students were guides for the students from Spain, Italy, Romania and Poland and presented them the school.
The guests were also invited to learn about waste management and recycling, the theme of the meeting. In the IT room, the host teachers prepared presentations and pair and group activities for all the students involved in the project. The first part ended with a game, “Recycling is Cool”, the students being challenged to use their knowledge and the new information and decide the recycling time for common waste (10 to 100 years). Then, they got instructions about the activities they have to do at home during the week, the results being presented on Friday.
In the second part of the program, they were challenged to do some activities: they received worksheets and they had  to fill in with some information, to choose the correct answer, to cut and paste the items, according to the quests. At the end of these activities, they were challenged again to play a game. The students, divided into two groups (Italy and Spain, Romania and Poland), had to race and put some common rubbish in the correct bin: things that can be reused and things that can be recycled. The team with the most correct placed items won.
In the afternoon, the students spent time with their friends from the partner schools. We think that they have enjoyed the first day in Macedonia J.

Tuesday – 5th of November 2019

On the second day, the students and the teachers went on a short trip around the town of Kumanovo. The first stop was a meeting with the mayor. He presented some of the measurements that had been taken in order to encourage recycling and to reduce the pollution of the town. Then, we visited the Kumanovo Museum, where we learnt about the history of the place and also about the history of Macedonia. The next activities included a visit to a factory that recycled plastic bottles and recipients and a visit to the local Water Filter Station. As water pollution is part of our project, the hosts thought of an activity called “Tap water: to drink or not to drink it – that is the question”. The specialists explained the students why the tap water in Kumanovo is drinkable and, instead of buying water from the supermarkets, they should drink it, because it is safe.

Wednesday – 6th of November 2019

The third day of the meeting was a challenge, for both students and teachers, to be creative and to use their imagination and things that can be recycled to create works of art.  The pictures say more than words. Everybody enjoyed the activities. Enjoy watching!

Thursday- 7th of November 2019

Any project meeting represents both activities on the topic of the project, but also learning about the culture of the host country. On the fourth  day we were invited on a trip to Ohrid, one of the oldest towns in Macedonia, which once had 365 churches, one for each day of the year and was called “The Jerusalem of the Balkans”. Here, we went on a walking tour of Old Town (Upper Gate, Samoil’s Fortress, St. Clement Church), the church of St. John at Kaneo, the church of St. Sophia and the city centre.

Friday – 8th of  November 2019

The last day came, but it was full of surprises, just like the other days.
In the morning, the teachers and the children met in the IT room and presented the results of their study of household waste management. They draw conclusions together  and they also suggested measures to take in order to reduce household waste in their communities. Then, the organisers invited us on a trip to ASNOM Memorial Museum in Pelince and a visit to St. Gjorgj church in the village of Staro Nagorichane, one of the oldest churches in Macedonia.
We returned to school  for the “Farewell ESCEI” show and the certificate awarding ceremony. After the show, everybody (students and teachers) were invited to  write a message about the experiences had during the week at Kumanovo, about their feelings, their friends and the friendship.
We all agreed that this week had been a challenge and also an experience, for both students and teachers, we all collaborated during the activities, we were challenged to discover new things and, most of all, we all made new friends. It was a great experience for all of us, students, teachers and parents.
We’re looking forward to the next meeting in Italy. Until then, enjoy the moments!
